Derek Huntriss looks back at the trip of a lifetime: his 1977 tour to Indonesia. From independence, just after the war, to the time of his trip in 1977 Indonesia possessed one of the most fascinating collections to be found in the world with no less than 90 classes of locomotive appearing on the system’s books. Remarkably by 1970 only 11 of these classes had disappeared. The range of types was remarkable from steam trams, 2-4-0s, twelve coupled, Mallets, compounds, and rack engines, produced by a score of builders from seven countries and three continents.
