East Coast Main Line

For a few months in 2019 the daily train of Plasmor blocks from Heck to Biggleswade and Bow ran top and tailed from Peterborough to Welwyn Garden City, then back to Biggleswade and finally on to Bow. 6L69, the 04.35 departure from Peterborough is seen in the sidings at Biggleswade shortly after arriving from Welwyn GC with 66149 at the South end and 66098 at the North. Motive power shortages on the East Coast produced some interesting substitutions prior to the introduction of Azumas. Needless to say, these substitutions tended to be on the lesser workings, as seen here with EWS liveried Class 90 No. 90039 passing through Sandy with the 12.06 Kings Cross to Newark Northgate. South of Huntingdon, the East Coast Main Line crosses the flood plain of the River Great Ouse and the course of the former Midland line to Kettering. Heading towards London in the late afternoon of 21st September 2019, the 12.00 Inverness-Kings Cross 'Highland Chieftain' passes this pastoral setting. Photo: Alan Jones

Following re-routing of the A14 and demolition of the viaduct over the East Coast Main Line, Huntingdon station is now much brighter and open - not to mention much quieter and less polluted. On a bright and sunny 16th May 2019, before the new A14 opened, Colas 37 No. 37521 heads South on the Up Main with the 10.00 Derby RTC to Ferme Park. Photo: Alan Jones.

Bradford to Kings Cross trains traditionally used the Lancashire and Yorkshire terminus at Bradford Exchange, but upon electrification of the Aire Valley line these services were switched to the former Midland terminus at Forster Square. On May 16th 2019, Driving Van Trailer 82209 leads the 06.30 Bradford Forster Square to Kings Cross through Huntingdon. Photo: Alan Jones.

Before the introduction of LNER Azumas on the East Coast Main Line, several spot hires were in place with East Midlands Trains for HST power cars and with DB for Class 90s. On 15th May 2019, towards the end of this time, EMT power cars 43061 and 43075 work the 14.15 Leeds to Kings Cross at Peterborough. Photo: Alan Jones.

On 15th May 2019 91125 stands at Peterborough's 'new' Up platform with the 14.02 York to Kings Cross whilst 66098 and 66149 head North with 4E25, the 11.25 (SX) Bow to Heck Plasmor Empties. At this time this working was top and tailed South of Peterborough and both locomotives were coupled together for the return journey. One of these engines will detach shortly, leaving the train to continue via the Joint Line. Photo: Alan Jones.

An occasional single car Class 153 from the Joint Line would slip in and out of the North end of platform 1 at Peterborough, contrasting with the procession of nine and ten car formations on the Main Line. Without making too much of a fuss about it, 153302 sets off on the 15.11 to Lincoln on May 15th 2019. Photo: Alan Jones.
