Colorado Adventure

The final indoor meeting of the 2021/22 season on 18 May was Colorado Adventure by David Brace.

David set the scene by reminding us that the state capital, Denver, is sometimes known as the Mile High City, and that Colorado is on the eastern side of the Rocky Mountains which provided a spectacular backdrop to some of his photographs.

Denver boasts a local metro service and railway museum, an impressive exhibit being a Big Boy. From Denver David took us to a number of lines including the rack operated Broadmoor Manitou and Pikes Cog Railway near Colorado Springs, the Cripple Creek and Victor Narrow Gauge Railroad, The Royal Gorge Route Railroad, The Durango and Silverton Railroad, The Rio Grande Scenic Railway, Leadvill Southern and Colorado Railroad. Some of David’s visits were made in the autumn when the altitude allowed snow to lie on the ground.

Railways in the USA are noted for their very long freight trains and these were well illustrated in scenic locations by David where the railway looped round the mountains to gain or lose height.
