A Hitchin & Welwyn Garden City branch presentation by Ray Schofield.
York was the “gateway to the north”, and just two years after the London & Birmingham Railway – Britain’s first mainline – opened, York was connected to the rail network. The route, from Euston via Rugby, Leicester and Derby was 40miles longer than the A1 road. Twelve years later in 1852, and 170 years ago, a new direct route from King’s Cross opened. Built on the site of a former smallpox hospital and allegedly Boudicca’s grave, this offering tells the story, and journeys of the Great Northern routes, with steam locomotion.
Doors open at 1:30pm
