Paul Beardsley & Don Wainman – “X” marks the spot

MEETING REPORT 10th FEBRUARY 2026

The use of social media seems to be in the limelight at present.  Still, it came as a surprise when the joint presentation at our February meeting entitled ‘X marks the spot’, contained excellent quality digital images gleaned from ‘X’ (formally ‘Twitter’).  We were treated to a vast array of railway photos, some taken by very well-known names including Eric Treacy & Ivo Peters and stretching from the 1920’s until the present day.  The writer in particular enjoyed such highlights as the obscure Reid-MacLeod turbine locomotive of 1924, LNER J67 8492 at Galashiels in 1948 (with tender attached – empty side tanks), a Stanier 8F 2-8-0 at Great Rocks (Derbyshire) in 1968, Peppercorn A2 Pacific ‘Blue Peter’ running in 2024, a view of the derelict Sheffield Victoria station in 1981, with a diverted DMU decanting passengers, a cl. 810 EMR set on test at Sheffield in 2024, views of Drax Power Station with various cl. 66 locomotives, celebrating 50 years of generation, the unique Stanier Turbomotive pacific 46202 in 1949, a cl. 08 shunter moving ‘clay hoods’ on the Wenford branch in 1980, an LNER B12 4-6-0 61508 in green livery at Kittybrewster in 1949, SR Adams radial tank 30582 on the Lyme Regis branch in 1959 and Fowler 7F 2-8-0 53800 at Evercreech junction.  Our thanks to Paul Beardsley & Don Wainman for a memorable afternoon.
