Oliver Bulleid was one of Britain’s last great steam locomotive engineers, and arguably one of the most controversial. Perhaps his best locos were the Merchant Navy class Pacifics – capable of great feats, but also suffering problems which led to them being rebuilt – did this perfect or spoil them? 35028 Clan Line of the class is one of best steam mainline performers currently in action, kept in immaculate condition by the Merchant Navy Locomotive Preservation Society (MNLPS).
Simon Martin, who has previously given us presentations on Oliver Bulleid’s former colleagues Edward Thompson and Sir Nigel Gresley, and is Treasurer of the MNLPS will come to tell us of the man and his locomotive: whether he resolves the debate we will have to see.
