Original BR Steam Film Show – Dave Gouldthorp

RCTS – West Midlands Branch Meeting Report

Monday 18th May 2026

The final meeting of our 2025/2026 season was a ‘Cine’ feature given by Dave Gouldthorp. Professionally restored with sound and commentary by Alcazar Productions they featured Dave’s travels in the 1960s until the end of BR steam.

Part 1 began on the Western Region mainly featuring the main line to Paddington through the West Midlands. Many local scenes were included from Hatton Bank, north of Warwick, to Birmingham Snow Hill. A rich variety of locos were observed in action and depicted a number of different classes.

This fast moving show covered all regions of BR from the Isle of Wight to Edinburgh and the far north. The second part of this presentation mainly covered rail tours leading up to the end of steam in August 1968. In a notable view taken from a moving rail tour we saw the Cunard ocean liner ‘Queen Mary’ in Southampton docks.

On board travels on the Waverley route and the Settle & Carlisle line were most interesting. In conclusion everybody enjoyed this journey of nostalgia. Dave was thanked for sharing his superb recordings reviving our memories of the 'Steam Age’!
