The Society has purchased at auction one of the supplementary plaques that was fitted to one of ‘our locos’ 37890. The engine started life as D6868, then carried 37175 before taking its final identity as 37890 in 1987. It was the first engine to carry the name The Railway Observer being bestowed in 1994. It was three years later that the supplementary plaque (pictured) was fitted and it was only on the loco for around two years, the loco having passed into the ownership of EWS in that time. In 1999 the engine was allocated to the EWS Special Projects pool and was selected for shipment to France and both the name and supplementary plates were removed at that time. Thus the plaque has been in store at Toton ever since, being offered for sale by auction by DB Cargo in ‘ex loco’ condition. It will be available for viewing at the archive in Leatherhead.
