Visit to South Wales

Eight members made a trip to Newport and Cardiff on 14th September with the Chester contingent travelling in both directions on the Holyhead WAG on which the Class 67s have been reinstated. The outward journey on the 07:16 departure from Chester had 67018 on the rear and the 17:14 return was hauled by 67015.

The Liverpool contingent using the 09:14 from Crewe had an interesting detour because of a track problem affecting platform 6. This resulted in the Class 175 taking the route towards Stoke for approximately half a mile before returning to Crewe and then continuing onwards to Shrewsbury.

In addition to the usual selection of freight it was an opportunity to see Canton’s Class 769s in operation and we were to enjoy the surprise of seeing 46100 Royal Scot on a special from Kingswear. Some photographers and news media were caught unawares when it arrived in Cardiff on the rear of its train because of its having used the triangle at Newport to turn around. All of which made for a thoroughly enjoyable trip in reasonable weather.
