This volume follows on from the initial volume covering the ‘First Generation Diesel Multiple Units’.  It is authored by the same writer who prepared Volume 1 and covers the 2nd generation DMUs in the same detailed manner.  The initial chapters explain the ‘Development of the Alternative Technology Project’ and how this effected the DMUs intended to replace mainly the first generation units.

Covering classes 140 to 166, the book looks at the way in which each class was developed and, it also covers the developments for each class during their journeys.  Again, the ownership of the vehicles is explained together with the variety of liveries used on these units during their lifetimes.

The images, all in colour bar one, are accompanied by detailed captions and follow the development and progress of the units through their life.  This can be from initial build until they units headed for scrap.

There is a section on accidents which makes fascinating reading as to the whys and wherefores of the incidents examined.  All with accompanying images of the scene, unit or recovery.

The book also includes a final chapter on the ‘Pseudo Sprinter’ also known as the Northern Ireland Class 450.  Also an interesting item to read.

This book will make a good addition to any modern traction enthusiast’s library.  It is highly recommended.
