Derived from the Society’s Loco Database, the book lists over 3400 name and number combinations for every single diesel, electric and gas turbine locomotive ever to run on the national network including the HST power cars. The dates of application and removal are also given. Nearly fifty photographs illustrate the various name plate styles and the locomotives that carried them with a last update in July 2026. Amongst the first names applied was Flying Scotsman whilst possibly the most used is Vulcan whilst many other fascinating facts await discovery within , such as the shortest time a name was carried, which appears to be less than 24 hours.
